Forklifts are an essential part of many industrial businesses. Managing large amounts of stock and materials would be impossible without them.
For this reason, you can't neglect your forklift tyres. You need to change your tyres regularly to ensure your forklift continue functioning correctly.
Here is everything you need to know about changing solid forklift tyres.
Changing solid forklift tyres
Changing solid forklift tyres is a highly technical process and requires some specialist equipment. You will need a forklift jack, an impact wrench, and a forklift tyre press.
Forklift tyres should only be changed by trained and competent personnel. If you need help changing solid forklift tyres, get in touch with Axis Tyres.
The steps for changing solid forklift tyres are:
- Use the impact wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the wheel or wheels you are changing.
- Raise the forklift with the forklift jack and finish removing the lug nuts once the wheel is off the ground.
- Remove the wheel and use the forklift tyre press to remove the old tyre from the wheel and press the new tyre on.
- Replace the wheel onto the wheel hub and tighten the lug nuts with the impact wrench. Ensure the nuts are tightened correctly to the manufacturer's specs.
- Spin the wheel to make sure it is balanced and spins freely.
- Test drive the forklift once all necessary tyres have been replaced to make sure the drive is smooth and there are no problems.
When you change a forklift tyre due to regular wear, you also need to change the corresponding tyre on the other side to make sure the forklift is steady and balanced.
Incorrect use of a forklift jack or forklift tyre press can result in serious injury and death.
Can you DIY?
Forklift tyres should only be changed by people who have been trained in the safe and correct use of the equipment and machinery needed to change tyres.
Incorrect use of a forklift jack or forklift tyre press can result in serious injury and death. Even if an untrained person changed a forklift tyre without injury, incorrect replacement procedures could cause significant damage to the forklift.
For example, if you tighten lug nuts too much, it can cause costly damage to the forklift wheel hub. If the lug nuts are too loose, the wheel can come loose from the forklift during use.
When do solid forklift tyres need to be replaced?
Solid forklift tyres typically have wear lines which indicate when you need to replace a tyre. Once the tread has worn down to that line, you must change the tyre.
It's important that you don't try to extend the life of the tyres beyond this point. Typically, the wear line indicates that 50% of the tyre's carrying capacity has been lost.
The damage to the forklift caused by using tyres beyond this point is far more costly than any savings you'll make on changing tyres less frequently.
